FLAG HISTORY: Raleigh artist William Jarl Browne provided the design of the North Carolina State flag. The North Carolina Convention approved the design on June 22, 1861.The date May 20, 1775 representing the much-questioned "Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence." The date, May 20, 1861 represents the date of North Carolina's secession from the union, In March of 1865, a bill was introduced and passed for the last design change for the North Carolina State Flag.
