Flag History:The Navy Jack design used by southern states during the War Between the States is sometimes referred to as the C.S.A. Jack, the battle flag or simply the Confederate flag. Seven Pines refers to the battle that took place on May 31 and June 1, 1862 in Henrico County, Virginia. The battle between Union and Confederate forces was inconclusive, with both sides incurring massive casualties. After the battle of Seven Pines, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia included the words Seven Pines in their battle flag, which they carried into later confrontations with Union forces, most notably, the Battle at Gettysburg Pennsylvania on July 1-3, 1863. The Gettysburg battle was the high water mark for the Confederate army in the struggle between the states and the beginning of the end of a divided union.
